Sylacauga, AL - Funeral service for Frank Smith Thacker Jr., 91, will be May 30, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Radney-Smith Chapel with Dr. Larry Morrison and Bro. Rick Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga, AL.
Frank Thacker died Saturday, May 27, 2017 at Brookwood Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank S. Thacker Sr.; mother, Clara Thacker; half-brother, Floyd Abbot; half-sister, Willie Mae Gilmore; brother, Bob Thacker; sister, Lucille Yancy; and his first wife of 18 years, Mildred Thacker.
Frank is survived by his wife of forty-eight years, Sylvia H. Thacker; son, Frank S. Thacker, III; step-son, Don E. (Roseann) Trimble; two grandsons, Frank S. Thacker, IV, and Brett E. Trimble; 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Ed Thacker; two sisters, Flossie Parker, and Nell Womack; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Thacker is a native of Fort Payne, Alabama and grew up in a family of eight children. He was a graduate of Fort Payne High School and Reynolds Business College. In 1943, Mr. Thacker entered the military service and proudly served his country as a member of the Army Medical Corps, during WWII. He retired from the City of Sylacauga in 2000 after a twenty seven year career as Revenue Officer. He is a past recipient of the Civilian Scout master Awarded from the Boy Scouts of America and post Commander of the American Legion Post 45 for seven year. Frank also served as a Grand Marshall for the Veteran's Day Parade in Sylacauga, and honored as the First Baptist Church's Veteran of the year in 2016.
Much of his retirement was given over to the pursuit of his favorite pastimes which included a strong sense of service to his church family and his love of birds; the latter from the comfort of his recliner. His harmonica was never far from his hand either.
Visitation will be Tuesday May 30, 2017 from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Radney-Smith Funeral Home.
